Fast Facts about Colorectal CancerA Message from the Co-Chairs:
Dear New Leaders,
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to a new look, new Cabinet and new year of exciting programming for New Leaders of Sunnybrook Foundation.
With the recent restructuring and rebranding of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the past few months have been a period of transition for New Leaders. Rejuvenated by the opportunity for change, an exceptional Cabinet of talented young professionals such as you is breathing new energy and ideas into New Leaders.
Over the coming year, you can expect improved communications, beginning with today's relaunch of our Newsletter, a redesigned website, and an enhanced membership package to acknowledge members' generous contributions to Sunnybrook.
And, as always, you can continue to expect the high standard of event programming that has become the hallmark of New Leaders since its founding over a decade ago. Beginning with the popular Bay Street Ball, to be held 29 July at Ken Morrish Park, New Leaders is planning a mouth-watering tasting event in the fall and a return to our marquee art auction in the spring of 2007.
Encouraged by our recent corporate partnerships with Wal-Mart of Canada, DataMirror, Klick Communications, Advanced Websites, among others, we see tremendous opportunity to grow New Leaders' membership base and community reach. This is an exciting time for Sunnybrook and New Leaders, and together we have an extraordinary opportunity to make a lasting and significant impact on one of Canada’s premier academic health sciences centres.
We hope to continue counting on your support as we bring awareness and resources to the outstanding patient care, research and education programmes at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
New energy. New ideas. A new spirit. Welcome back to New Leaders.
All the best,
Howard Shore and Dr. Ryan Wiley

Coming 29 July: Bay Street Ball Aims to Strike Out Colorectal Cancer
This month, New Leaders of Sunnybrook Foundation will host the highly popular and successful Bay Street Ball baseball tournament. Held annually since 2000, the tournament pits teams from several leading Bay Street financial firms against each other in a rousing competition.
Players raise pledges and donate the proceeds to New Leaders, and we reward them with great prizes—especially to the man and woman who raise the most. The winner on the field will also get a prize: the coveted New Leaders Bay Street Ball trophy. This year, 15 teams will vie for these awards (not to mention for bragging rights!), making this year’s match the largest Bay Street Ball yet. Adding to their fundraising efforts are the generous donations of our two Gold Glove sponsors, DataMirror and Wal-Mart Canada and our Silver Slugger sponsor, J.J. Barnicke Limited.
Bay Street Ball has already proven to be a winner for New Leaders and Sunnybrook, raising almost $15,000 last year. This year’s efforts will no doubt shatter that fundraising target, and proceeds could not go to a more worthy cause. For 2006, money raised by the Bay Street Ball will support research and awareness of colorectal cancer, and the dynamic Dr. Linda Rabeneck, Sunnybrook’s Cancer Program Chief and Regional Vice President of Cancer Care Ontario, will be on hand to accept New Leaders’ donation.
Come out and enjoy the fun on Saturday 29 July at Ken Morrish Park in Scarborough (off Beechgrove Drive, south of Lawrence Avenue East) , or, if you’re interested in volunteering to help out that day, contact Rick Kotick at rkotick@rogers.com. We are still in need of food supplies to feed the teams who have so generously given of their time to raise pledges for this years' event. If anyone has a food contact or can help source some of the items (hot dogs, hamburgers, water, etc., it would be incredibly appreciated. Please contact Rick at the above email.
Back to ContentsFast Facts about Colorectal Cancer:
Colorectal cancer develops in the lining of the colon or rectum, and often begins as polyps that have no symptoms.
When polyps are detected through screening, 90% of colon cancers can be removed and prevented from developing.
In Canada, colorectal cancer is the number-one cause of non-smoking-related cancer deaths in men and women.
In Canada 48 men and women are diagnosed every day with colorectal cancer.
Lack of physical exercise and eating a diet high in red meat and low in vegetables raise a person's risk for colorectal cancer.
How Can I Help Prevent Colorectal Cancer?
- Learn your family history—know your risk category.
- See your doctor and have regular screening tests.
- Take preventive measures and commit to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Tell everyone you know that undergoing screening tests can prevent colorectal cancer.
